Preemptive Love

Strong opening talk for the January Series at Calvin College.

Jeremy Courtney is the founder of the Preemptive Love Coalition, which is dedicated to helping a large backlog of children with heart defects in Iraq. (There would be a backlog in any case, given their loss of infrastructure, but there seems to be an alarming increase in rate of defects as well.) I didn’t know enough to be interested. But the story was gripping, including a fatwa, friendship across religious lines, and real impact in the face of tragedy. But then he takes it to a whole other gear, generalizing to his idea of Preemptive Love, which he was introduced to from a cleric named Sheik Ali. Preemptive Love is a call to everyone, but then he addresses why Christians in particular should be engaged in this.

I had this good friend, Don Libby, now Fr. Don Libby, who refused to be pegged as a creationist or evolutionist. “When we know more the apparent disagreements will be resolved.” He would point to the Big Bang as an example. Scientists like to pretend that they never espoused steady state universe; “how could those bible thumpers believe the universe had a beginning?” and Hubble was persecuted for his discoveries before he was lauded.

Read this account of humanity’s near extinction, and thought of how I have poo-pooed the idea of the flood’s global nature. “Probably some local catastrophe that seemed like the world was ending.” So this was a reminder to me to strive for some of Don’s humility.
